UK economy 'best in Europe'


The UK is in the best shape out of all the economies in Europe, according to a leading economist.Paul Krugman, who won the 2008 Nobel prize for economics, said that the UK's economic policies had been "pretty good" and called them "intelligent".

Russia's economy in freefall


Russia's economy is expected to shrink by six per cent this year. It is a dramatic turnaround from just a few months ago when it was predicted to grow by five per cent. Unemployment is rising by more than half a million a month. The result can already be seen on the streets of Moscow's soup kitchens.

World growth worst for 60 years

World economic growth is set to fall to just 0.5% this year, its lowest rate since World War II, warns the International Monetary Fund (IMF).
In October, the IMF had predicted world output would increase by 2.2% in 2009.
It now projects the UK, which recently entered recession, will see its economy shrink by 2.8% next year, the worst contraction among advanced nations.
