Hilary Devey- Women at the top documentary

Multimillionaire entrepreneur Hilary Devey wants to find out why so few women make it to the top in business. Hilary discovers why men still hold more than 80 per cent of Britain's senior jobs, examining factors like maternity leave, the cost of childcare and women's leadership style.
Along the way, Hilary hears some home truths about the prospects for women inside her own company, and confronts her belief that it is up to the individual to smash through the glass ceiling. She also learns that mixed gender teams can lead to bigger profits, convincing her that the male-dominated British business world is missing out on a valuable asset.

Gender pay gap to last almost another 100 years

It will take almost a century for UK women managers to be paid the same as their male counterparts, a study says.

Female managers are now paid an average £31,895 per year, compared with males earning £42,441 for doing the same job, according to the report by the Chartered Management Institute (CMI).

Queens speech - Equalities Bill

The bill aims to end age discrimination "in the provision of goods, facilities and services". It also includes a ban on wage secrecy clauses in contracts, which forbid colleagues from discussing their pay - in an effort to tackle the pay gap between men and women. Also, 'positive action' on employing staff will be "entirely optional" under the bill and is "not about quotas".
But bosses who wanted to positively discriminate would have to ensure the candidates were "equally suitable" and there was evidence that a group - for example women or ethnic minorities - were underrepresented.
